Battery storage on the Port West estate, delivered for Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd under an EPC agreement. Solar runs alongside it across several estate tenancies. The connection is high voltage, which brings Energex into the design: stability modelling, droop curve assessment, protection grading.

A standalone Sungrow battery on an embedded network site. It cuts demand in the evening peak and trades into the wholesale market. At 900 kWh it sits squarely in the band the New South Wales commercial rebate is aimed at.

What the connection actually takes

The battery is the easy part to buy. The connection, the protection design and the fire separation are what decide whether it runs.

Network connection

Applications, technical studies and negotiation with the distributor, to high voltage where required. Connection conditions determine what the asset is permitted to do, so they are settled before equipment is ordered.

System stability

PSCAD modelling of inverter behaviour, droop curve assessment and dynamic response, agreed with the network operator. Larger connections are approved on the model, not on the datasheet.

Protection and earthing

Relay selection and grading, earthing design and fault study. Discrimination is what keeps a fault local instead of taking out a site.

Power quality

Harmonic and voltage assessment against the connection limits, measured rather than assumed, so compliance is demonstrable at commissioning.

Fire and separation

Separation distances, deflagration venting and a site specific fire assessment, resolved against the final position of the equipment.

Monitoring and control

Supervisory control across solar and storage, so the asset delivers the outcome it was sized for rather than a default schedule.

Where the return comes from

All three are in play on every site, in different proportions. Which one dominates is set by the tariff and the load shape, not by the size of the battery. That is why we size from a bill.

Questions we are asked

Q1

Do I need solar to install a commercial battery?

No. The New South Wales incentive does not require it, although a project that includes new solar attracts a higher incentive. Two of the four sites here run solar and storage together. Strathpine Square is battery only.

Q2

What size battery does a commercial site need?

It is set by the load shape and the tariff, not by floor area or by the size of the bill. Two sites with the same annual consumption can need very different systems. The battery calculator sizes from your own demand profile.

Q3

What does the network connection involve?

An application to the distributor, the technical studies it asks for, and a set of agreed connection conditions. High voltage and larger connections add system stability modelling and protection grading. Those conditions are settled before equipment is ordered, because they govern what the asset is allowed to do.
